Generation Queer: Stories of Youth Organizers, Artists, and Educators

In a series of illustrated profiles of queer and transgender people who pushed for and achieved significant change, Topping and Khullar (Rebel Girls Rock) craft a compelling and informative compendium for “the youth who are creating history and reclaiming the future.” The assemblage—divided into six themed chapters—showcases 30 intersectionally diverse artists, educators, and organizers within the queer community, including contemporary figures such as Black bisexual Muslim educator Blair Imani; gender-nonconforming author, speaker, poet, and comedian Alok Vaid-Menon; and more. Infographics depict timelines and definitions throughout, alongside brief biographies of historical figures including Marsha P. Johnson, Harvey Milk, and Sylvia Rivera. Later chapters examine successful youth walkouts, marches, and protests, and provide actionable steps for how to safely and responsibly engage in similar activism. Khullar’s realistic portraiture focuses on figures’ faces, and spot illustrations emphasize queer symbols that underscore the history and culture conveyed via Topping’s empathetic and conversational text.
